In What Instances is This Alternative Flooring Appropriate? Self-Avowed Cork Flooring Geniuses Lock-Horns as the Battle Ensues! (Part II)
In Part I, we discussed a few of the other cork flooring limitations. It is essential that, when considering its installation, moisture content must be analyzed in more than one season in the area in which it is to be installed!
Fortunately, today, the majority of cork-flooring planks have moisture-resistant tongue-and-groove designed into them, allowing for secure and moisture-resistant installation of the planks. Due to the suberin, a waxy substance that the material naturally contains, many of today’s choices are already moisture-resistant.
The cost-conscious should note that cork flooring is more expensive than either linoleum or carpeting, at least in most instances. Furthermore, there are other issues to consider with respect to both its use and placement.
One significant issue is the placement of heavy furniture. If you anticipate placing heavy objects on cork flooring, use coasters! Similarly, for those not overly dexterous, damage can, and often does, occur when heavy objects are clumsily dropped on cork floors.
You may be disappointed to learn that you are unable to use a damp mop to clean cork flooring. Water-absorption, of any type, may result in permanent damage to this alternative flooring choice!
You may, however, be consoled in learning that you may clean spills and stains with a damp rag. Polyurethane is customarily applied to cork flooring’s surface. Removing spills post-haste, however, as is true with other flooring choices, decreases your chances of having a permanently damaged surface.
When contemplating cork flooring installation, avoid exposure to direct sunlight if you want to minimize discoloration. As the product ages, as is true with all of us, the color tends to fade.
Sunlight exposure, while seemingly inconsequential, is an important issue to consider in cork flooring installation. If you take the time to review your options, you will be able to significantly minimize fading due to sunlight exposure by making certain that it is not placed in an area that is exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time throughout any given day.
Undeniably, cork flooring is, in most instances, very long-lived and may be easily repaired if damaged. It is also important to note that this flooring alternative creates, all other things being equal, a serene environment.
Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking, however, that cork flooring is appropriate in all instances. Those truly knowledgeable when it comes to this product, while acknowledging its many attractive features, readily admit that there are limitations!
