Cry the Beloved Country: Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton’s rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)

Barfly: Surprisingly entertaining photograph of L.A. lowlife, and boozy, recklessly macho author Henry Chinaski, played with bravado by Rourke. Dunaway is magnificent as his alcoholic soul mate. Based on the autobiographical writings of cult top choice Charles Bukowski, who might be noticed on one of the bar stools. Cast includes Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway, Alice Krige, Jack Nance, J.c. Quinn, and Frank Stallone. (97 minutes, 1987)

The Singing: Nun: Sappy comicbook stuff based on an actual Belgian nun whose dedication is split between religious work and making hit records. Cast includes Debbie Reynolds, Ricardo Montalban, Greer Garson, Agnes Moorehead, Chad Everett, Katharine Ross, Ed Sullivan, Juanita Moore, and Tom Drake. (98 minutes, 1966)

Sudden Fear: A new twist about a boy who cried wolf too often. A prankish kid witnesses the murder of a visiting dignitary. The problem is that no one will believe him. Cast includes Lionel Jeffues, Susan George, Tony Bonner, and Jeremy Kemp. (95 minutes, 1970)

La Nuit de Varennes: Clever historical legend has such reknowned entities as Casanova and Thomas Paine cross roads at the time of the French Rebellion. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Jean-Louis Barrault, Hanna Schygulla, Harvey Keitel, and Jean-Claude Brialy. (133 minutes, 1982)

The Search for One-Eyed Jimmy: Oddball tale of a documentary fiImmaker, just out of college, who returns to his old Brooklyn community and finds cinematic encouragement as his camcorder follows the track of a missing local low life. Cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Badalucco, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Anne Meara, Jennifer Beals, Nicholas Turturro, Aida Turturro, Holt McCaIIany, Sam Rockwell, and Tony Sirico. (82 minutes, 1996)

Gypsy Girl: Gypsy Girl is a brooding account of backward Hayley Mills finding her first romance with McShane exciting yet unstable. Cast includes Hayley Mills, Ian McShane, Laurence Naismith, and Geoffrey Bayldon. (102 minutes, 1966)

Shadowlands: Poignant, prudent, peacefully gratifying drama in regards to British author C. S. Lewis (Ackland), a verified bachelor, and how he is changed while he falls in love with American divorcee Bloom. Quality work is done by the megastars utilizing an outstanding award caliber script by William Nicholson. Cast includes Joss Ackland, Claire Bloom, David Waller, and Rupert Baderman. (90 minutes, 1985)
